Thanks to Wikipedia, WordPress, Facebook, Reddit and others, Obama is going to stop SOPA! Great day he’s also stopping Keystone! Well at least for now anyway. Here’s a great video about SOPA and why we are opposed to it, even though we’re not American citizens. It is important to find better ways to deal with legit copyright issues while still protecting the beauty of social media which is of course, sharing! These laws will make start ups (even little ones like mine) a legal nightmare thus discouraging innovation and risk taking in this still very new industry. There are already so many negatives brought into our internet realm by government… a government that is supposed to be democratic and represent the people, not just the companies with big corporate monopolies. The Canadian government is also bringing their own version of internet oppression with the current bills PM Harper vowed to pass this term that would seriously increase costs for people like myself working online, and most likely reduce our bandwidth if nothing else. I am disgusted with the Canadian governments failure to provide anywhere near the kind of internet they have in newly developed countries like Korea. It affects us so much and keeps us as the economic hick cousins of our international marketplace counterparts.
